Manual Photography: Creating Sophisticated Images Written in Light, Space, and Time with Stephen Billick Time: Tuesdays, June 11-July 16, 6pm-8pm Instructor: Stephen Billick Location: NOCCA, 2800 Chartres Street ABOUT THIS CLASS This is a comprehensive survey of practically everything a photographer needs to know in order to begin shooting with real purpose. The course will thoroughly cover photographic equipment, exposure strategies, complete focus and depth-of-field control, and the difficulties involved in motion capture. This class will also serve as an introduction to composition control, aesthetic theory, and viewer psychology. REQUIREMENTS Enrollment is limited to adults 18 and over. Students will need to bring their own cameras for this class. Students are welcome to use either a film or digital camera--the only requirement is that the camera have a "manual" function (or "M" setting on the main dial) allowing them to expose manually. If prospective students are unsure if their camera has this function, they can email firstname.lastname@example.org for more info. Students needn't worry about having extra lens options or any external accessories like a flash. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR Stephen Billick is a lecturer from Austin, TX, where for the past six years he's taught at the city's groundbreaking Austin School of Photography. At ASOP he and founder/photojournalist Andrew Shapiro worked to revolutionize the understanding of the medium through a deep exploration of light, space, and time in a photograph and how these dynamics could be used to structure deeply communicative images. Since 2015, Stephen has been working as ambassador for the curriculum, teaching summer workshops in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico as well as recently collaborating with the New Orleans Athletic Club on a series of introductory and advanced classes. In addition to lecturing on photography, Stephen has a cinema production company called Ou Phrontis Co. In 2018 he wrote and directed Taos, starring Canadian actresses Jessica Huras and Kathleen Munroe, inspired by the life of Georgia O'Keefe.Taos will screen at U.S. and international festivals in the fall of 2019. NOTE A minimum number of students must enroll in this class for it to "make". If fewer students enroll than are necessary, the class will be cancelled and full refunds will be issued. If we have to cancel the class, we'll make every effort to notify students at least one week before the first class meeting.
